Before you start: student entrepreneur vs student self-employed

• Student self-employed (legal/tax status): determines social contributions and whether you can remain fiscally dependent.
• Student entrepreneur status at your institution: not a legal status, but similar to a top-athlete status and provides study flexibility. Benefits differ per institution.

Step 1 — Start your application

Two options:

1) Email hello@gentrepreneur.be. You’ll receive an invitation to create a Startium account and book a status conversation.

2) During a first coaching meeting, the coach may identify that you can apply; that can count as your status conversation.

In the status conversation you discuss

1) Whether you meet the conditions (e.g. clear plan/BMC, coaching, enterprise number, community membership)

2) Whether your admin data in Startium is correct

3) Which facilities you may need and how to request them

4) Administrative handling of your status

Step 2 — Fill in documents

• You receive an IOEM document from the HOGENT coach, fill it in, sign and return it.

Step 3 — Approval

Documents are processed internally and you receive the final signed document confirming approval.

Step 4 — Request facilities at HOGENT

After approval, request facilities via the IOEM app:

Examples of possible facilities

• No mandatory attendance for certain classes (with approval)
• Arrive late/leave early (with approval)
• Move an exam (timely request)
• Adjust course package (with study counsellor)
• Use the student entrepreneur co-working space at De Wijnaert (contact: elab@hogent.be)

Important

• Not automatically renewed: request again each academic year.
• Deadlines to request the status:
  • 1 December → January exams
  • 1 May → May/June exams
  • 15 June → second session summer exams
