What is this about?

The Cultural Value Scan is a canvas/tool from Cultuurloket to map out how your work operates (as an individual cultural worker or an organization). The goal is to connect your artistic/cultural story to your financial plan and gain insight into:

• what you offer (products/services)
• who you do it for (customer groups/audiences)
• why you do it (your core story/value)
• where your model still has gaps or vulnerabilities

How does the scan work? (according to Cultuurloket)

1) Self-diagnosis

You fill in the canvas and use it as a self-diagnosis:

• where are you strong?
• what is still missing?
• where are there gaps in your story or revenue model?

2) Optimize or innovate

Based on your diagnosis, you choose a direction:

1. Innovate: add new elements/connections and build further on what is already there.
2. Optimize: streamline, simplify, or focus (sometimes also: do less, or bundle things).

3) Choose your scale

You can fill in the scan for your entire organization, but it is sometimes more useful to zoom in on one component, such as:

• one product/performance
• one customer group
• one channel or offering line

By testing different “scales”, you can see more quickly how your operation evolves.

When is this useful?

Useful if you:

• want to structure your revenue model or operations (create an overview)
• are looking for weak spots (dependencies, too few customer groups, unclear value)
• want to determine where to focus (optimization) or instead broaden (innovation)
• need to explain your story to partners, subsidy providers, or sponsors
