The Research Track (track for researchers).

Last updated: 2 June 2026

What is The Research Track?

The Research Track is a practice-oriented track that helps researchers take the step from research to market potential. You build entrepreneurial skills and explore whether (and how) your research can find its way to the market.

Who is this track for?

The Research Track is open to researchers from all Flemish universities and universities of applied sciences, regardless of the research topic (humanities, sciences and social sciences).

The track is aimed at, among others:

  • PhD candidates
  • postdocs
  • ZAP and other researchers

What does the track involve?

You work with your own research case and learn, among other things, to:

  • identify opportunities in your research
  • sharpen your value proposition
  • explore business models
  • pitch and present
  • work with the lean startup method

Theory (online learning environment)

In preparation for the first session, you will get access to an online learning environment with modules (about 6 hours):

  • differences and similarities between researchers and entrepreneurs
  • identifying opportunities in your research
  • value proposition
  • business models
  • pitching and presenting
  • lean startup method

Each module includes a case study of a researcher who became an entrepreneur.

Exercises (during the sessions)

During the sessions you apply the theory to your own research, including group sessions, individual assignments, feedback from fellow participants and pitch moments.

Timing (structured over 4 days)

A typical edition consists of 4 sessions:

  • Day 1 (in person): you make your idea understandable
  • Day 2 (in person): you explore the entrepreneurial possibilities of your idea
  • Day 3 (online): you prepare your pitch
  • Day 4 (online): you pitch to a jury

Practical

  • The Research Track takes place in English.
  • There is a maximum capacity of 21 participants per edition.
  • The Research Track is an official Doctoral Schools training.
